Federation History

A Brief History of the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women

The South Carolina Federation of Republican Women
(SCFRW) was founded in 1961 and 2006 marks our 45th year of continued service in the political arena.

The tireless efforts of Mrs. Connie Armitage and Mrs. Pat Barnes in 1960 and 1961 laid the foundation for the vibrant and productive SCFRW of today.  The SCFRW is comprised of approximately 1200 members statewide with 27 active Local Units.  It was through the dedicated efforts of the hundreds of women that came before who have produced the energetic and enthusiastic membership of 2005.

The purpose of the organization, as set forth in bylaws drawn up in 1961, have remained virtually unchanged. Then, as now, the SCFRW is in accord with the NFRW bylaws and guidelines:

 > To promote an informed public through political educational activity
 > To increase the effectiveness of women in the cause of good government
 > To facilitate cooperation between National and state federations
 > To foster loyalty to the Republican Party and to promote its principles
 > To support objectives and policies of Republican National Committee
 > To work for the election of the Republican Party Nominees

The SCFRW is divided into six districts according to the Congressional Districts. Unit clubs participate in local, state, and national campaigns.

Members raise funds and lobby for legislation on various issues. Community Service is provided through avenues that each local unit selects in their immediate area.

Federated Republican Women serve their communities, their state and their nation in elected and appointed positions throughout the various levels of government.
